The Future of TV - The evolving landscape of HDTV, IPTV and mobile TV

The key driver of European digital TV uptake to 2010 is expected to be digital-to-terrestrial services. It will to drive uptake to 109m by the end of 2010, compared to 78m in the US. Digital cable will drive growth in the US by 2010, closely followed by digital satellite. Unlike Europe, digital terrestrial is not expected to be a significant digital TV plat form in the US. Asia-Pacific is expected to be the largest market for mobile TV subscriptions with around 76.3 million subscribers by 2012, representing a CAGR of 51.7%. A key reason for companies to invest in IPTV solutions is to increase the revenue they get from each subscriber. Providing a broader range of services to which custome rs can be cross-sold increases revenue potential. Sony's Stan Glasgow talks TVs, Blu-ray

Certainly in the longer term we'd like them to be the same size as LCD. We'd like them to be 52 inch, 46 inch, 36 inch...it's just a matter of time.

What about affordability? How long until these are affordable for the mainstream consumer? Glasgow: It's going to be years and years until price points come down to where they're anywhere close to LCD. In the not-too-distant future, you'll have a choice in LCD at this size, or you can buy an OLED at the same size at a premium. I almost see it as a potential--and I don't know this, nobody knows the answer--I almost see this as the upper end of flat-panel television.

We can continue to make it thinner. It's 3 millimeters now, but it can get thinner. Eventually it's printable on a plastic substrate that can bend. But I don't think it's going to take many years to get to that level.

In fact, there are many different quality levels of digital television programming. The most common are: Standard Definition TV (SDTV) - SDTV is the basic level of quality display and resolution for both analog and digital. Transmission of SDTV may be in either the traditional (4:3) or widescreen (16:9) format. Enhanced Definition TV (EDTV) - EDTV is a step up from Analog Television. EDTV comes in 480p widescreen (16:9) or traditional (4:3) format and provides better picture quality than SDTV, but not as high as HDTV. High Definition TV (HDTV) - HDTV in widescreen format (16:9) provides the highest resolution and picture quality of all digital broadcast formats. Combined with digitally enhanced sound technology, HDTV sets new standards for sound and picture quality in television. (Note: HDTV and digital TV are not the same thing -- HDTV is one format of digital TV.) What does this mean for you? We have set up in-depth information on both Digital Television (DTV) and High Definition Television (HDTV) to answer all your questions.

Multiplex on brink of turning multiuse

Digital projectors and satellite dishes are about to change multiplexes forever. A wealth of live alternative programming -- think college sports, for example -- soon will be delivered on compact hard drives or through the air rather than on film shipped in heavy metal canisters.

How soon is a matter of money, contracts and new equipment. But theater owners and programming experts say there's little doubt that the next two to three years will bring some eye-popping events to the Omaha metro area.

Imagine watching a Big Red football game live on the big screen.

Or an auditorium of video gamers in Omaha competing with gamers in San Francisco.

Or a music festival on a Tuesday night, with concerts featuring top stars of rock, country, hip-hop and classical.
