Investment ideas from the one-house grid – part II

If dad had decided to buy an LCD TV rather than a plasma TV, the demand from his 60" TV might have been reduced by as much as 200-300 watts, depending on the models, and this in turn would have reduced peak load.

Investments

Each of the above solutions leads to an investment, and as intermittent power sources grow as a percentage of total generation, the needs for these solutions will increase. Below is a selection of companies working to provide each of the above solutions to the overall problem of matching electrical supply and demand.

Electricity storage

Electricity storage can serve several related needs of the grid. First, it can absorb excess supply of power at times of otherwise low demand, which means that intermittent and baseload sources of power do not need to be curtailed, even though they are producing power at near zero marginal cost.

EPB Expects To Choose Equipment Provider For Cable TV Next Month

EPB President Harold DePriest says the utility expects to be able to choose an equipment provider for the system's planned new cable TV service by next months.

He said it has taken longer than expected to settle all the provider, who will furnish an "end to end" electronic backbone for the system.

Mr. DePriest says EPB may spend some $10 million to get that equipment in place, which will be a major step in getting the cable TV venture going.

He said EPB is now looking at providing cable TV service by next February.

The process is also ongoing to line up the channels that will be offered, he said.

TV, video games not related to nightmares: study

Television and computer games aren't to blame for dark dreams about things that go bump in the night, according to a new study that finds no link between children's viewing or gaming habits and their nightmares.

The research debunks popular wisdom as well as previous studies in which parents and children reported that frightening dreams were triggered by TV programs.

"We found no correlation between the amount of TV watching and computer game playing and nightmare frequency," says Michael Schredl, head of research for the Sleep Laboratory at Germany's Central Institute of Mental Health.

TFT LCD production in 2008-2009 to be enabled by plentiful supply

There appears to be no constraint on TFT LCD panel production for PC and TV applications this year or next, as 20 tanks of TFT LCD glass substrate capacity will come on-line in 2008, according to DisplaySearch.

TFT LCD panel makers will increase their process-area capacity about 25% this year, while their glass suppliers will increase gross substrate area capacity about 32%. It works like a treat with Foxtel's own electronic program guide, and even when you're not at home you can use a special web page or your mobile phone to remotely program the iQ2 box to record a show.

The iQ2 comes as part of Foxtel's HD+ package, which currently delivers five high-definition channels (with programs in both 720p and 1080i) from the BBC, Discovery and National Geographic channels, plus Fox Sports and ESPN. The pay-TV carrier will also broadcast the 2010 Winter Olympics and Commonwealth Games, along with London's 2012 Olympic Games, in HD.

The slim black iQ2 box includes a Foxtel Digital HD tuner so there's only one box to plug in and one remote control to bother with. The system contains a 320GB hard drive that can store upwards of 30 hours of HD programming or 90 hours of standard-definition content.

A New Wave in cables as Henley Designs introduces a new Van den

Its high natural bandwidth and excellent noise rejection properties makes it suitable for both audio and 75 ohm video applications including aerial/cable TV, video, surround and S/PDIF digital audio connections. Indeed the Wave comes close to becoming a universal AV cable.

Some twenty years ago, van den Hul took the decision that all its cables were to be 100 % P.V.C. and Halogen Free. It designed a new jacket material called HULLIFLEX(r) with those specific properties. This was the start of the van den Hul "GreenCare" program where it moved to working with lead-free solder; environmentally friendly packaging; recycling of waste, etc. And today the building is heated with water pumped from deep in the ground through a heat exchange system so using very little fossil fuel based energy.

O\'Brien-backed consortium wins digital TV licence

Three consortia had vied for the 12-year contract to rival existing cable and satellite providers. They were Boxer, Easy TV and One Vision.

Easy TV involves RTE and UPC, while One Vision includes TV3, Setanta and Eircom.

Recently, Boxer urged the BCI to award it the licences on the basis that it was the only applicant with no conflict of interest because it doesn't have interest in either satellite or cable.

A statement from BCI said that the Commission considered the applications received from three consortia and has awarded the contracts in principle to Boxer DTT Limited.

The award of the contracts is subject to clarifications and the successful outcome of contract negotiations, which will take place in the coming months."

Boxer has said it will offer basic subscription prices that will be below 10 a month for the DTT service to consumers and will allow viewers to top up their channel selections 'a la carte'.

CAS thriving in the region

IMS even identified China Digital TV (formerly known as Beijing Novel-Tongfang Digital TV Technology) as a leading CAS supplier in the Chinese market, which IMS predicts would increase Chinese company's worldwide market position from eighth at the end of last year to fourth or fifth by the end of 2010.

IMS says "the growth of Chinese digital cable has rapidly become the single-largest force in DTV. As a result, CAS providers have been successful in China and are forecast to continue to gain share against all of the major western CAS providers".

One "western" CAS provider that has a presence in China and a number of countries in the Asia-Pacific is Irdeto, which has dual headquarters in Amsterdam and Beijing. Recently, Irdeto reports that its DVB CAS will be part of Hebei Broadcasting and TV Information Network (Group) and Xinjiang Broadcast & TV Transmission Network's digital migration process.

The Colorado-based satellite TV provider filed suit in Delaware Friday, asking the court to declare that Dish's current DVR software does not violate TiVo's '389 patent.

Dish says in the filing that it updated its software nearly two years ago in response to TiVo's patent violation suit. It wants TiVo to stop making public statements that allege that the current software on Dish's DVRs are still in violation because it's "causing uncertainty in the marketplace for DVRs," according to the court filing.

A TiVo spokesperson said the company had not yet seen the filing, and therefore could not comment.

Digital leaves few options for replacing portable sets

"That's the way it usually goes, although with it being an LCD screen and digital tuner, (the price) may not drop too much," he said.

The loss of all those analog portable TVs removes an important way to communicate with the public during an emergency, said Keith Harrison, assistant administrator of the Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management.

"When we get information out to people, we like to get it out by every means possible," said Harrison, who also is president of the California Emergency Services Association. "A lot more people watch TV than listen to AM radio."

But the digital TV transition isn't a major public safety issue because broadcast radio is still available to deliver important messages, he said.

"In preparedness kits, we tell people to have a battery-powered radio," Harrison said.

No 'D-Day' for Cable Firms

3If you have cable television from a company that will go 100 percent digital: You will need a converter box or a digital TV. 3 If you have cable television from a company that will not go 100 percent digital: You need not make any changes. News You can use

The transition from analog to digital television is seven months away for those who receive free over-the-air programming.

However, for many cable companies, that transition will take longer.

That's because there are two digital transitions: the broadcast transition and the cable transition.

At midnight on Feb. 17, 2009, by federal law, every analog television that uses "rabbit ears" or an antenna to receive free over-the-air programming will go static. This is the digital broadcast transition.
