Special Olympics - Mary-Ellen Powers to be honored for work in
Cable & Telecommunications Association's 19th annual Public Service and Excellence in Cable Television Awards, to be held at OceanCliff in Newport.
In addition to being honored with the rest of the staff from Special Olympics Rhode Island Magazine, which is receiving a John Notte III Award for Superior Production Values in the category of System: News and Information, Program Series, Powers is also receiving a John Notte III Award for Superior Production Values in the category of System: Individual Achievement-Cable Television Program Host/Reporter, Program Series.
Although the show has been honored several times by NECTA, Powers is the first from Special Olympics Rhode Island Magazine to receive an individual award.
"When I read the e-mail, I was literally speechless," said Powers, who learned she had won from Gerri Walter, Special Olympics Rhode Island's Director of Public Relations, during last month's taping of the show.

EPB Expects To Choose Equipment Provider For Cable TV Next Month
EPB President Harold DePriest says the utility expects to be able to choose an equipment provider for the system's planned new cable TV service by next months.
He said it has taken longer than expected to settle all the provider, who will furnish an "end to end" electronic backbone for the system.
Mr. DePriest says EPB may spend some $10 million to get that equipment in place, which will be a major step in getting the cable TV venture going.
He said EPB is now looking at providing cable TV service by next February.
The process is also ongoing to line up the channels that will be offered, he said.

TV, video games not related to nightmares: study
Television and computer games aren't to blame for dark dreams about things that go bump in the night, according to a new study that finds no link between children's viewing or gaming habits and their nightmares.

The research debunks popular wisdom as well as previous studies in which parents and children reported that frightening dreams were triggered by TV programs.
"We found no correlation between the amount of TV watching and computer game playing and nightmare frequency," says Michael Schredl, head of research for the Sleep Laboratory at Germany's Central Institute of Mental Health.
